The prescription drug
amitriptyline hydrochloride (
Elavil®) comes in tablet form and is used for the treatment of
depression in adults. The amount your healthcare provider recommends will be based on various factors, including your age and if you are taking any other medications. For example, when giving this drug to teenagers or elderly people, lower doses are recommended, such as amitriptyline 10 mg three times daily, or 25 mg once a day at bedtime.
Regardless of the amount your healthcare provider prescribes, it is important to take amitriptyline tablets exactly as directed. Do not adjust this amount without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision. In addition, it is important to understand that it can take up to four weeks for the effects to be felt.
