Amitriptyline Drug Side Effects

Amitriptyline hydrochloride (Elavil®) is a medication often prescribed for the treatment of depression.
Although most people tolerate this antidepressant well, it is possible to develop side effects while taking amitriptyline. Side effects of the drug may include dizziness, drowsiness, and confusion, among others. If you suddenly stop taking this antidepressant, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, headaches, and sleep problems.
In most cases, side effects are minor and either do not require treatment or can be treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. However, there are a number of potentially serious side effects that require immediate medical attention. Notify your healthcare provider right away if you experience suicidal thoughts or behavior, seizures, or hallucinations.
