Amitriptyline hydrochloride (Elavil®) is a prescription medication approved for treating depression. It is a type of tricyclic antidepressant that appears to work by affecting certain chemicals in the brain (serotonin and norepinephrine). Amitriptyline comes in tablet form and is generally taken one to three times a day. Side effects that have been reported include dry mouth, constipation, difficulty urinating, and drowsiness.
