Amitriptyline hydrochloride (Elavil^®) is a prescription drug used for the treatment of depression. There are six available strengths of amitriptyline, ranging from 10 mg to 150 mg. Several manufacturers of generic medications make a generic amitriptyline drug. However, the medicine's brand name version, which was sold as Elavil, is no longer manufactured. Side effects of amitriptyline can include confusion, a dry mouth, drowsiness, and constipation. A few of the conditions you should let your healthcare provider know about before taking amitriptyline include schizophrenia, severe anxiety or agitation, diabetes, and heart problems (including heart disease). Seek medical attention immediately if you happen to overdose on amitriptyline. Symptoms of an amitriptyline overdose can include restlessness, confusion, seizures, and very low blood pressure (hypotension).
