Effects of Amitriptyline

Amitriptyline hydrochloride (Elavil^®) is a prescription medicine commonly used for the treatment of depression. It belongs to a class of antidepressants known as tricyclic antidepressants, which work by affecting levels of certain brain chemicals (including serotonin and norepinephrine).

Several clinical studies have been conducted on the effects of amitriptyline. Studies have shown the drug to be effective for depression treatment. It may also be used "off-label" to help relieve chronic pain and to prevent migraine headaches. It can also help with bedwetting, ADHD, fibromyalgia, and bulimia. The medicine is also effective at helping people quit smoking.
