Problems With Amitriptyline

In most cases, amitriptyline hydrochloride (Elavil®) is a safe and effective depression medication. However, some people may develop problems with amitriptyline during treatment. In clinical studies, the most common side effects included:
 
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Dry mouth
  • Weight gain or weight loss
  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Changes in blood sugar levels.
 
Problems can also occur in people who have suddenly stopped taking amitriptyline. These withdrawal symptoms can include:
 
  • Irritability
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Restlessness.
