Can Breastfeeding Women Safely Take Aplenzin?
Aplenzin™ (
bupropion hydrobromide) passes through breast milk in humans. The manufacturer of Aplenzin recommends that women should not take this medication while breastfeeding. Therefore, if you are nursing an infant, talk with your healthcare provider before taking this
antidepressant.
What Does the Research Say?
Studies have shown that
bupropion (the active ingredient in Aplenzin) passes through breast milk, probably in small amounts. There has been one reported case in which a breastfed infant experienced a
seizure that might have possibly been related to bupropion usage in the mother. However, there have also been a number of other cases reported in which no problems occurred.
If your healthcare provider decides that it is okay for you to take Aplenzin while breastfeeding, make sure to watch for any changes or problems in your infant. In particular, watch for
seizures, decreased appetite, irritability, or unusual fussiness. If you are at all concerned, please consult with your healthcare provider and/or your child's healthcare provider.
