Celexa and Weight Loss

In clinical studies, certain side effects were reported with Celexa, and weight loss was one of them (occurring in more than 1 percent of patients). Although people only lost about a pound on average, it is possible to lose large amounts of weight while on the antidepressant. It is unclear why Celexa causes weight loss, but factors such as loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea (all potential side effects of the medication) may contribute to the unintended weight loss.

Celexa and Weight Loss: An Overview

Celexa® (citalopram hydrobromide) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression). There are a number of possible side effects of Celexa. Weight loss appears to be one of them. For some people, this may be a good thing. For a lot of people, though, unintended weight loss can be a problem.

How Common Is Weight Loss With Celexa?

In clinical studies of Celexa, weight loss occurred in more than 1 percent of people (although the exact percentage was not reported). On average, people lost only about a pound while taking Celexa. However, it is possible for people to lose large amounts of weight while taking the medication.

Why Does Celexa Cause Weight Loss?

It is not entirely clear why Celexa causes weight loss. Celexa can often cause loss of appetite, nausea, and diarrhea, which may contribute to weight loss. Often, these side effects go away with time. Also, since weight gain can be a depression symptom, treating the depression can lead to weight loss.

If you are experiencing too much weight loss with Celexa, be sure to let your healthcare provider know.
