As a
serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, Cymbalta works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. This action helps to balance the levels of these chemicals in the brain (unbalanced serotonin and norepinephrine levels can cause depression and
anxiety).
Although it is not entirely clear how Cymbalta works for nerve pain, it appears to help block the pain signals in the spinal cord or brain. It is not clear exactly how the medication works for fibromyalgia pain.
Clinical studies have shown Cymbalta to be beneficial for improving depression and
anxiety symptoms, relieving nerve pain in people with peripheral diabetic neuropathy, and reducing fibromyalgia pain.
