Research Findings on Cymbalta and Fibromyalgia
Recent studies have suggested that
Cymbalta may be effective at treating
fibromyalgia. One fairly large study published in the December 2005 edition of
Pain involved women with fibromyalgia (with or without
depression). Women taking this drug experienced more relief, especially from pain, compared to women not taking it.
More importantly, women experienced pain relief, regardless of whether they had depression or not. It was once thought that Cymbalta was effective at treating fibromyalgia only because of its
antidepressant effects, since fibromyalgia may be linked to depression. This study suggests that the medication is an effective
fibromyalgia treatment independent of its antidepressant effects.
For many people with fibromyalgia, Cymbalta is a safe and effective remedy. It is one of only a few prescription medications approved for such use. Even though the drug is classified as an antidepressant, it can be useful for people with fibromyalgia even if they do not have depression.
