Cymbalta and Fibromyalgia Studies
Recent studies have suggested that
Cymbalta may be effective at treating
fibromyalgia. One fairly large study published in the December 2005 edition of
Pain involved women with fibromyalgia (with or without
depression). Women taking Cymbalta experienced more
fibromyalgia relief, especially pain relief, compared to women not taking Cymbalta.
Importantly, women experienced pain relief regardless of whether they had depression or not. It was once thought that Cymbalta was effective at treating fibromyalgia only because of its
antidepressant effects (since fibromyalgia may be linked to depression). This study suggests that Cymbalta is effective at treating fibromyalgia -- independent of its antidepressant effects.
Final Thoughts on Cymbalta and Fibromyalgia
For many people, Cymbalta is safe and effective for
fibromyalgia treatment. It is one of only a few prescription medications approved for such use. Even though Cymbalta is classified as an antidepressant, it can be useful for people with fibromyalgia even if they do not have depression.
