Cymbalta and Suicide

During clinical studies of antidepressants (including Cymbalta) and suicide, there was an increased risk of suicidal behavior in children and teenagers who took the medications. Although Cymbalta has not been approved for use in children and teenagers, it can be prescribed off-label for these age groups. Therefore, contact your healthcare provider immediately if you notice any signs of suicidal behavior, such as aggressive behavior or acting on dangerous impulses.

An Overview of Cymbalta and Suicide

Cymbalta^® (duloxetine hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine used to treat the following conditions:

Depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression)
Peripheral diabetic neuropathy pain (nerve pain in the hands, feet, arms, or legs due to diabetes)
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
Fibromyalgia.

Cymbalta is part of a group of medications called serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). As with all antidepressants, there may be an increased risk of suicidal behavior when taking Cymbalta.

FDA Warning For Cymbalta and Suicidal Behavior

S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a special warning about the risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior with antidepressant use in children and teenagers. The warning was issued due to concerns that antidepressants seemed to increase the risk of suicidal behavior in children and teenagers in clinical studies. Although Cymbalta is not approved for use in children or teenagers, it may be used "off-label" for these age groups.
