Deplin Side Effects

Nausea, sleeping problems, and a loss of appetite are some of the potential side effects of Deplin. It is difficult to know exactly what problems to expect, as this product has not undergone the clinical testing that most prescription medications must go through. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you develop any signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or unexplained swelling.

An Introduction to Deplin Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Deplin® can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Deplin. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Common Side Effects of Deplin

The prescribing information for prescription medications contains the exact percentage of side effects that occurred in clinical trials. However, Deplin is considered a "medical food." Medical foods are not required to have the same detailed prescribing information as prescription medications. Therefore, it can be difficult to know exactly what side effects to expect, and how common the reactions may be.
Deplin contains L-methylfolate, which is a form of folic acid. Folic acid does not usually cause side effects in most people; however, side effects are still possible. Based on the potential side effects of folic acid, Deplin side effects may include:
  • Decreased appetite
  • Nausea
  • Gas
  • Abdominal (stomach) bloating
  • Sleeping problems
  • Problems concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Overactivity or excitement
  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • A bad taste in the mouth.
