Depression is a condition that can strike anyone, and it can destroy both family life and the life of the person who is depressed. The illness affects a person's body, mood, and thoughts. Symptoms of depression include restlessness and irritability; feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness; and persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment. Treating depression may involve medications, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two.
