Effexor Indications

Effexor^® (venlafaxine hydrochloride) is a prescription medication indicated for treating depression. It is only approved for use in adults and should not be used for childhood depression.

Effexor is a type of serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that acts on certain chemicals in the brain (serotonin and norepinephrine). If the levels of these chemicals are unbalanced, they can cause depression. By balancing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine, Effexor can treat depression and help prevent depression relapses.

Healthcare providers may also occasionally recommend off-label Effexor uses. Possible off-label uses of the medication include the treatment of fibromyalgia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraines, and hot flashes during menopause.
