Emsam Interactions Explained
The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when
Emsam is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
Apraclonidine (Iopidine)
Atomoxetine (Strattera)
Strattera and Emsam should not be taken together, or within two weeks of each other, due to the risk of dangerous side effects.
Brimonidine (Alphagan P)
Buspirone (BuSpar)
You should not take
buspirone while taking Emsam (or if you have taken Emsam within the past 14 days) due to the risk of dangerously high blood pressure.
Caffeine
You should use caffeine sparingly while taking Emsam due to the risk of dangerously high blood pressure. Be aware that many foods and medicines (such as "stay-awake" products and
migraine products) contain caffeine.
Carbamazepine (Tegretol, Tegretol XR)
Due to the risk of dangerous side effects (such as high blood pressure or
seizures), you should not take
carbamazepine and Emsam within two weeks of each other.
Cough, Cold, and Allergy Products
Taking Emsam with many cough, cold, and allergy products (including eye drops or nasal products) can increase your risk of dangerous side effects, such as high blood pressure. Most of these products should never be taken with Emsam. While you are taking Emsam, always check with your healthcare provider before taking any cough, cold, or allergy products.
