Fetzima and Sexual Side Effects

When taking Fetzima (levomilnacipran), sexual side effects may occur. These can include decreased sex drive, impotence, and ejaculation problems. If you have such problems while taking this drug, talk to your healthcare provider. Do not stop taking the medication suddenly or reduce your dose on your own, as it may worsen your depression symptoms.

Does Fetzima Cause Sexual Side Effects?

Fetzima™ (levomilnacipran) is a prescription antidepressant medication. Like many other antidepressants, it has the potential to cause certain sexual side effects.

More Information on Sexual Side Effects With Fetzima

Depression itself can cause certain sexual problems, including a decrease in sex drive. Unfortunately, so can many antidepressants. In clinical trials on Fetizma, sexual side effects were more common in people taking the drug than in those taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients), indicating the problems were more likely caused by the medication than the depression itself.
Sexual side effects were more commonly reported in males than females in these clinical trials. In fact, less than 2 percent of females in the studies reported any type of sexual side effect. Men reported erectile dysfunction and ejaculation problems, among other things.
Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction, also sometimes called impotence, is the inability to get or keep an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. Although a man may occasionally experience problems with getting or maintaining an erection, erectile dysfunction occurs when a man has repeated problems with erections. In clinical studies, erectile dysfunction was reported in up to 6 percent of men taking Fetzima, compared with 1 percent of men taking a placebo.
Ejaculation Problems
Ejaculation problems were also reported in clinical studies. These problems with Fetizma included premature ejaculation, delayed ejaculation, and an inability to ejaculate. All of these were grouped together in the prescribing information for Fetizma, so it is difficult to know how often each of them occurred individually. As a whole, ejaculation problems occurred in up to 5 percent of men taking Fetzima, compared with less than 1 percent of men taking a placebo.
