Can Breastfeeding Women Take Forfivo XL?
Forfivo™ XL (
bupropion XL) passes through breast milk in humans. As with other
bupropion medications, the manufacturer of
Forfivo XL recommends that women not take this medication while nursing. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or plan to start, talk with your healthcare provider before beginning treatment.
More Information on Forfivo XL and Breastfeeding
Studies have shown that bupropion (the active ingredient in Forfivo XL) passes through breast milk, probably in small amounts. There has been one reported case in which a breastfed infant experienced a
seizure that might have been related to bupropion usage in the mother. However, a number of other cases in which no problems occurred have also been reported.
If your healthcare provider decides that it is okay for you to take Forfivo XL while breastfeeding, watch for any changes or problems in your infant. Make sure to contact your child's healthcare provider if your child develops problems, such as:
- Seizures
- Decreased appetite
- Irritability
- Unusual fussiness.
Talking With Your Healthcare Provider
You should discuss breastfeeding and
Forfivo XL use with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
