bupropion XL) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of
depression, also known as major depression or clinical depression. Some
antidepressants can cause weight gain, while others can cause weight loss. All
bupropion products, including
Forfivo XL, are generally known as antidepressants that lead to weight loss.
For many people, this may be a desirable side effect. In fact, healthcare providers sometimes use this side effect to their advantage, as they know that people who may benefit from this side effect (often women with some weight to lose) will want to stay on this medication. For others, however, unintended weight loss can be a problem.
How Common Is Weight Loss With Forfivo XL?
Forfivo XL was approved based on studies of shorter-acting versions of bupropion (
Wellbutrin® and
Wellbutrin SR®). Therefore, the potential side effects listed in the prescribing information for Forfivo XL are actually the side effects from studies with Wellbutrin and Wellbutrin SR.
In studies, 19 percent of people taking Wellbutrin SR 400 mg per day experienced weight loss of five pounds or more. Weight loss occurred slightly less frequently (14 percent) in people taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin SR daily. Because Forfivo XL is a high-dose bupropion product (450 mg daily), it is expected that weight loss would be even more common.
