Forfivo™ XL (bupropion XL) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of depression. It is an extended-release version of bupropion that is taken once a day. It contains the highest strength of bupropion available in a single tablet: 450 mg.

Forfivo XL is made by Pillar5 Pharma, Inc., for IntelGenx Corp. It is currently protected by patents that prevent any generic versions from being sold in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Forfivo XL is set to expire in June 2027. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.

However, other circumstances could come up to extend or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new Forfivo XL uses. Once the drug goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Forfivo XL drug.

Is Bupropion a Generic Forfivo XL?

No -- bupropion is the active ingredient in Forfivo XL (as well as numerous other medications), but it is not a generic version of it.
