Isocarboxazid: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking isocarboxazid if you have:

Heart disease
High blood pressure (hypertension)
A history of stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA or "mini-stroke"), or other bleeding in the brain (such as a subarachnoid hemorrhage)
Pheochromocytoma, a certain type of adrenal tumor
Have an upcoming surgery or procedure involving a general or local anesthetic
Liver disease, including liver failure or cirrhosis
Frequent headaches
Bipolar disorder or a family history of bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression)
A history of suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts
Kidney problems, including kidney failure (renal failure)
Seizures or epilepsy
An upcoming radiology procedure
An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or are taking thyroid medications
Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you:

Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant (see Marplan and Pregnancy)
Are breastfeeding (see Marplan and Breastfeeding)
Drink alcohol regularly.

It is extremely important to tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines you take, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Never take any medication (including non-prescription medications) without first checking with your healthcare provider.
