Benefits of Lexapro
Some of the benefits of Lexapro® (escitalopram oxalate) include treating depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression) in adults and adolescents, and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults.
As with many other antidepressants, Lexapro can take several weeks to begin working. Sometimes, other people will notice an improvement in your depression symptoms before you do. Often, the physical symptoms of depression (such as pain or changes in sleep) will improve first, sometimes within the first few weeks of treatment.
It usually takes at least four to six weeks before significant changes in mood occur. It is important to give Lexapro a chance to work before becoming discouraged.
As a type of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), Lexapro works by acting on a specific chemical within the brain known as serotonin. Serotonin is one of several chemicals used to send messages from one nerve cell to another. When the levels of serotonin become unbalanced, this imbalance can cause a variety of conditions, including depression.
Lexapro helps to block the reuptake of serotonin so that more serotonin remains in the space between the brain's nerve cells.
