If you are taking Aplenzin (bupropion hydrobromide), weight loss is a possible and common side effect. Although it is not entirely clear why this occurs, it is thought that other side effects of the medication (such as loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting) may be factors. Also, because weight gain is a symptom of depression, treating the depression with Aplenzin may cause weight loss.
An Overview of Weight Loss and AplenzinAplenzin™ (bupropion hydrobromide) is a prescription medicine used for the treatment of depression (also known as major depression or clinical depression). There are a number of possible side effects of Aplenzin. Weight loss appears to be one of them. For many people, this may be a desirable side effect. For others, however, unintended weight loss can be a problem.
How Common Is Weight Loss With This Medication?Aplenzin was approved based on studies of shorter-acting versions of bupropion (Wellbutrin® and Wellbutrin SR®). Therefore, the available information on potential side effects for Aplenzin comes directly from Wellbutrin or Wellbutrin SR studies (not from studies specifically done on Aplenzin).
In studies, 19 percent of people taking Wellbutrin SR 400 mg per day (which is equivalent to Aplenzin 464 mg once daily) experienced weight loss of five pounds or more. Weight loss occurred slightly less frequently (in 14 percent) in people taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin SR daily (which is equivalent to Aplenzin 348 mg once daily).
Why Does Aplenzin Cause Weight Loss?It is not entirely clear why Aplenzin can cause weight loss. This antidepressant can cause loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting, which may contribute to weight loss. Often, these side effects go away with time. Let your healthcare provider know if these problems do not go away over time. Also, because weight gain can be a symptom of depression, treating the depression can lead to weight loss.
If you are experiencing too much weight loss with Aplenzin, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.
