Barbiturates
Taking desipramine with barbiturates can increase the risk of side effects of both desipramine and barbiturates (such as drowsiness or dizziness). Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your doses of these medications if you are taking them together.
 
Benzodiazepines
Taking desipramine with benzodiazepines can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Buspirone (BuSpar)
Because combining desipramine with buspirone may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Taking desipramine with cimetidine can raise the level of desipramine in your blood, increasing your chances of side effects. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your doses of these medications if you are taking them together.
 
Fentanyl
Combining desipramine with fentanyl may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Intravenous Methylene Blue
Taking desipramine with intravenous methylene blue can increase your chance of developing dangerous side effects, including serotonin syndrome. Do not take these medications together.
 
Lithium
Combining desipramine with lithium may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.
 
Linezolid (Zyvox)
Taking desipramine with linezolid can increase your chance of developing dangerous side effects, including serotonin syndrome. Do not take these medications together.
 
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Taking desipramine with MAOIs can increase your chances of developing dangerous side effects. Do not take desipramine if you have taken an MAOI within the past two weeks.
