Depression Home > Forfivo XL Seizures
There appears to be an increased risk for seizures in people who take Forfivo XL. This risk increases significantly when higher dosages of the medication are taken. Also, people who have certain health conditions, such as bulimia or liver problems, or those taking certain medications are more likely to have seizures while taking this antidepressant.
Does Forfivo XL Cause Seizures?Forfivo XL™ (bupropion XL) is a prescription medication used to treat depression. This drug is known to increase the risk for seizures, especially in certain groups of people.
Who Is Most at Risk for Seizures With Forfivo XL?Some people may have a higher risk for seizures due to Forfivo XL. This includes people who have:
- A seizure disorder
- A history of brain trauma or brain injury
- A brain tumor or nervous system tumor
- Severe cirrhosis or other liver problems
- Bulimia or anorexia.
Also, people taking certain medications may have an increased risk for seizures (see Forfivo XL Drug Interactions). Stopping alcohol or sedative medications suddenly also increases the risk.
How Common Are They?No studies have been done to formally look at the risk for seizures in people taking Forfivo XL, although studies in mice suggest that bupropion XL (the active ingredient in Forfivo XL) may be less likely to cause seizures than bupropion hydrochloride (the active ingredient in Wellbutrin®, Wellbutrin SR®, Wellbutrin XL®, and Zyban®). Therefore, it is assumed that the risk for seizures with Forfivo XL in humans is probably similar (or perhaps smaller) than that of the bupropion hydrochloride products.
Based on information from the bupropion hydrochloride products, seizures occur in 0.4 percent of people taking 300 to 450 mg of bupropion hydrochloride a day (the standard dosage for Forfivo XL is 450 mg a day). The risk for seizures increases significantly at higher doses. For example, increasing the dosage from 450 mg to 600 mg resulted in a 10-fold increase in seizure risk. Seizures were more likely to occur when people first started taking bupropion. Also, certain types of people are more likely to have seizures.
