Depression Home > Forfivo XL Uses

If you have depression, your healthcare provider may prescribe Forfivo XL. This medication is the only high-dose, once-a-day formulation of bupropion, and works by affecting certain brain chemicals. Forfivo XL is approved for use in adults age 18 and older. There are also some "off-label" uses for Forfivo XL, such as treating bipolar depression or seasonal affective disorder.

What Is Forfivo XL Used For?

Forfivo™ XL (bupropion XL) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of depression. It is a long-acting version of bupropion, and is the only high-dose (450 mg), once-a-day formulation.
Depression is more than just "feeling sad." Some of the common symptoms of depression include:
  • Decreased interest in things that you used to enjoy
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Changes in sleep (sleeping too much or not enough)
  • Changes in appetite, with weight gain or weight loss
  • Physical pain.
Keep in mind that antidepressants often take a few weeks, or even longer, to begin working. Sometimes, other people like friends, relatives, or coworkers will notice an improvement in your depression symptoms before you do. Often, improvements in your physical symptoms of depression, such as pain or changes in sleep, will be most noticeable at first before you notice significant improvements in mood. It is important to give Forfivo XL a chance to work before becoming discouraged.
Counseling and therapy (see Psychotherapy for Depression) are often used along with antidepressant medications to treat depression. Ask your healthcare provider if counseling or therapy would be good options for you (see Depression Treatment).
