Depression Home > Tofranil Dosage
Most adults start with a daily Tofranil dosage of 75 mg, either taken as a single dose or as smaller doses throughout the day. Based on your response to the medication, your healthcare provider will make adjustments to the dose. When treating children for bedwetting, the usual starting dose of Tofranil is 25 mg, taken an hour before bedtime. Tofranil dosing guidelines should be followed carefully to ensure a safe treatment process.
The dose of Tofranil® (imipramine hydrochloride) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- The condition being treated
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may currently be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
The recommended starting Tofranil dose for the treatment of depression is Tofranil 75 mg per day (taken either all at once at bedtime or divided into smaller doses throughout the day). If needed, your healthcare provider may increase your dose up to 300 mg total per day.
Although Tofranil is not approved for use in teens, the manufacturer gives recommendations for Tofranil dosing in teens. When treating the condition in teenagers or the elderly, lower doses are recommended. The recommended starting dose for these groups is Tofranil 30 mg to 40 mg total per day (taken all at once or split into smaller doses).
If you do not take your Tofranil as scheduled, take your missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if you usually take your dose at night, you may not want to make up the missed dose during the day, due to the risk of drowsiness. Also, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
