Tofranil Uses in Children and Teens

Tofranil is not recommended for treating depression in people under 18 years old, as it has not been thoroughly studied in people in these age groups with depression. For bedwetting, the drug is approved for children as young as six years old. Your healthcare provider can give you more information on using Tofranil in children or teenagers.

Off-Label Tofranil Uses

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Tofranil for treating something other than the conditions listed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. At this time, there are several off-label Tofranil uses, such as for:

  • Chronic pain: Tofranil works best for chronic pain that is nerve-related, such as nerve pain caused by shingles (including postherpetic neuralgia).

  • Anxiety disorder: Many antidepressants (including Tofranil) are used to treat anxiety disorders.

  • Incontinence: The medication is sometimes used to treat problems with bladder control in adults.

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): Tofranil can be used to treat ADHD, especially if other medications have not been effective or cause side effects.

  • Fibromyalgia: The drug has been used to treat pain and other symptoms of fibromyalgia.

  • Migraine headaches: Tofranil can be used on a daily basis to prevent migraine headaches. It is not effective, however, for treating a migraine headache once it starts.

  • Bulimia: The medication has been found to improve bulimia symptoms, including binge eating and vomiting.

  • Smoking cessation: Tofranil is sometimes used to help people quit smoking.
