Depression Home > Trazodone as a Sleep Aid

Using Trazodone as a Sleep Aid

When trazodone is used for the treatment of depression, it is usually taken up to three times per day. However, when used for insomnia, it is taken only once before bedtime. Also, trazodone dosing for insomnia is using lower than the dosage for depression.

Because the effects of trazodone may last into the day, it is important to learn how the medication affects you before driving or operating heavy machinery.

Trazodone as a Sleep Aid: Final Thoughts

Even though trazodone is not approved as a sleep aid, it is commonly prescribed "off-label" for this use. It is generally effective and is often more affordable than other sleep aids. However, since there are possible risks associated with trazodone, talk to your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of using trazodone as a sleep aid.
