Depression Home > Trimipramine Side Effects
Nausea, dizziness, and constipation are some of the side effects that have been reported with trimipramine. Side effects of this medicine are generally minor and, in most cases, do not require medical attention. However, there are some side effects of trimipramine that are more serious and should be reported to a healthcare provider right away, including any signs of an allergic reaction, confusion, or changes in heart rhythm.
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with trimipramine maleate (Surmontil®). However, not everyone who takes the antidepressant will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate the drug well. When people do develop trimipramine side effects, in many cases they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with trimipramine. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of trimipramine side effects with you.)
Trimipramine has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occur in a group of people taking the drug are documented and are then compared to side effects that occur in another group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.
In these studies, some of the side effects of trimipramine included:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Difficulty urinating
- Dry mouth (see Surmontil and Dry Mouth)
- Weight gain or weight loss (see Surmontil and Weight Gain)
- Erectile dysfunction (ED or impotence) or changes in sex drive (see Surmontil Sexual Side Effects for more information)
- Changes in blood sugar levels
- Blurred vision
- Increased sweating
- Shakiness (tremors)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Flushing (redness of the skin, especially the face).
Withdrawal side effects have been reported in people who have stopped taking trimipramine suddenly. These side effects of trimipramine withdrawal can include nausea, headaches, and a general ill feeling (see Surmontil Withdrawal).
