Nardil Sexual Side Effects
While you are taking Nardil, sexual side effects that may occur include ejaculation problems, the inability to achieve an orgasm (anorgasmia), and impotence (also known as erectile dysfunction). If you do develop sexual side effects with Nardil, talk to your healthcare provider. He or she may recommend an erectile dysfunction medication, adjust your Nardil dosage, or prescribe another antidepressant.
Nardil® (phenelzine sulfate) is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of depression. It is part of a group of medications called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). As with all medicines, side effects are possible with Nardil. Some of these side effects can affect a person's sexual well-being. In the case of Nardil, a few sexual side effects have been reported.
In clinical studies using Nardil to treat depression, the following sexual side effects were reported:
- Impotence, which is usually defined as a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. Ultimately, impotence is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection that is firm enough for sexual intercourse. Impotence is also known as erectile dysfunction (or ED for short).
- Problems ejaculating, such as delayed ejaculation or the complete inability to ejaculate.
- Anorgasmia (the inability to achieve orgasm, in men or women).
The exact percentages of people who experienced these side effects, however, were not reported.
It is impossible for your healthcare provider to know beforehand whether you will develop any sexual side effects while taking Nardil. Also, if a person does develop sexual side effects, it is difficult to know whether these problems are caused by another condition or by Nardil itself.
However, if you develop any sexual side effects while taking Nardil, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider. He or she may be able to recommend treatments, such as an erectile dysfunction medication. Depending on how severe your sexual side effects are, he or she may also recommend that you adjust your Nardil dosage or try another medication for depression.
