Precautions and Warnings With Nefazodone

There are many precautions and warnings with nefazodone, including important information on who should not take the drug. Before starting the antidepressant, let your healthcare provider know if you have bipolar disorder, liver problems, or any allergies. Possible side effects of the medication include low blood pressure, suicidal thoughts or behavior, seizures, and priapism. You should not take nefazodone if you are allergic to any components of the drug or are also taking cisapride, pimozide, triazolam, or carbamazepine.

Nefazodone: What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk to your healthcare provider prior to taking

nefazodone hydrochloride (Serzone^®) if you have:

Bipolar disorder or a family history of bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression)
Have heart disease or have had a heart attack or stroke
Chest pain
Dehydration
Seizures or epilepsy
Had a recent heart attack
An upcoming surgery
Liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis
A history of suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts
Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.

Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:

Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
Breastfeeding.

Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you may be taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
