Nortriptyline hydrochloride (
Pamelor®) is approved for the treatment of major
depression in adults. It is believed to work by affecting the levels of certain chemicals in the brain, allowing more to remain, thereby relieving
symptoms of depression. It comes in the form of capsules, and nortriptyline is generally taken anywhere from one to four times a day.
Most people don't experience any problems when taking nortriptyline capsules; however, a liquid form is also available for those who have difficulty swallowing the capsules. In addition, you may find that taking this medication with food helps prevent stomach upset. If you experience drowsiness or dizziness during treatment, ask your healthcare provider if you can take nortriptyline before bedtime to help avoid this.
