Nortriptyline Substitute

Many people who are using
nortriptyline hydrochloride (Pamelor®) to treat their depression find the medication to be effective at relieving their symptoms. It is also generally well tolerated, with side effects -- if they even occur -- tending to be mild and easily treated. However, in some cases, the medicine does not work as well as hoped or it causes intolerable side effects. If this happens, a substitute for nortriptyline needs to be considered.

Alternatives to this drug include:

  • Therapy
  • Other antidepressants
  • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)
  • Alternative (natural) therapies.

Specific examples of nortriptyline substitutes are things like cognitive behavioral therapy, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), acupuncture, valerian, and St. John's wort.
