Oleptro Drug Interactions

Oleptro and Serotonin Syndrome

Several of the known interactions with Oleptro are related to a potentially dangerous group of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome. Such symptoms might include:

  • Confusion
  • Hallucination
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Feeling faint
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Muscle spasm
  • Difficulty walking
  • Diarrhea.

Serotonin syndrome usually occurs when people take more than one medication that affects serotonin at the same time. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. In many cases, such combinations are still recommended, although with more careful monitoring. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be dangerous.

Oleptro Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Oleptro is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Anticoagulant or Antiplatelet Medications
Combining Oleptro with medications that "thin" the blood (medications with anticoagulant or antiplatelet properties) could increase the risk of bleeding. Check with your healthcare provider before taking Oleptro with any of these medications.

Additionally, Oleptro may interact unpredictably with warfarin.

Blood Pressure Medications
Sometimes, combining Oleptro with a high blood pressure medication may cause low blood pressure (hypotension). Watch for symptoms such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. In some cases, your healthcare provider might need to lower the dosage of your blood pressure medication.

Buspirone
Because combining Oleptro with buspirone may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, check with your healthcare provider before taking these medications together.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitors
Oleptro is broken down (metabolized) by certain enzymes (known as CYP 3A4 enzymes) in the liver. Many other medications (known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors) slow down these enzymes, potentially leading to high levels of Oleptro in the bloodstream (perhaps increasing the risk of Oleptro side effects). Check with your healthcare provider before combining such medications. In some cases, a lower-than-normal Oleptro dosage may be necessary.
