Who Should Not Take Parnate?

You should not take Parnate if you:

Are allergic to Parnate, tranylcypromine sulfate, or any inactive component used to make the medication. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients.
Have heart disease or any other heart condition.
Have high blood pressure (hypertension).
Have a pheochromocytoma (a certain type of adrenal tumor).
Have cerebrovascular disease, including a history of a stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or any bleeding in the brain.
Are undergoing elective surgery. You should stop Parnate for at least 10 days before undergoing any surgery which involves general or local anesthetic.
Have liver problems, including liver failure or cirrhosis.
Are taking any of the drugs or foods that should not be taken with Parnate (see Parnate Drug Interactions and Parnate Food Interactions).
