Impotence is usually defined as a total inability to achieve erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. Ultimately, impotence is the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Impotence is also known as erectile dysfunction (or ED for short).

 

In previous studies, impotence occurred in up to 10 percent of men taking Paxil CR. Impotence was most common in men with panic disorder or social anxiety disorder. Only 5 percent of men with depression taking Paxil CR reported problems with impotence.

 

Priapism has occurred in very few men taking Paxil CR. Priapism is a painful erection of the penis that does not go away, even after sexual intercourse or masturbation. If left untreated, priapism can lead to permanent damage to the penis. For this reason, it is very important to seek medical attention immediately if you think you are having symptoms of priapism. Even though this may seem embarrassing, it is necessary to avoid permanent damage to the penis. If your healthcare provider is not available, you should seek emergency medical care.

 

In previous studies, up to 10 percent of women taking Paxil CR reported orgasm problems. Often, this means problems achieving orgasm. This may be related to a decreased sex drive (which is seen in up to 12 percent of women taking Paxil CR). However, the two problems can occur separately.

 

Paxil CR Sexual Side Effects: Summary

It is impossible for your healthcare provider to know beforehand whether or not you will develop any sexual side effects with Paxil CR. Also, if a person does develop sexual side effects, it is challenging to know whether these problems are because of the condition or Paxil CR itself. This is because sexual symptoms are common with some of the conditions that Paxil CR treats. For example, one-third of people with untreated depression report sexual side effects.

 

If you develop sexual side effects while taking Paxil CR, make sure to talk with your healthcare provider. There is treatment that he or she may be able to recommend. Depending on how severe your Paxil CR sexual side effects are, he or she may also recommend that you adjust your Paxil CR dosage or try another depression medication.
