Is Pexeva Safe While Breastfeeding?
Pexeva® (
paroxetine mesylate) is known to pass through breast milk in small amounts. However, the effects on a nursing child are not entirely known.
Because of the potential for serious side effects, it is generally recommended that healthcare providers look at the possible risks and benefits before recommending Pexeva while breastfeeding. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding while taking this drug, or are even considering it, make sure to let your healthcare provider know.
More Information on Breastfeeding and Pexeva
Pexeva passes through breast milk in such small amounts that a nursing child would likely ingest very little of the medication.
Several studies have shown that when a woman takes
paroxetine (the active ingredient in Pexeva) while breastfeeding, very little or none of the drug is found in the child's body.
However, side effects have been reported in nursing children whose mothers were taking paroxetine. These side effects included irritability,
constipation, and difficulty feeding. In most of these cases, the mothers also took paroxetine during pregnancy, making it difficult to determine if the infants' effects were due to taking the drug during breastfeeding or during pregnancy.
Many experts consider Pexeva safe for use during breastfeeding. If you and your healthcare provider determine that is is okay breastfeed while you are taking this drug, be sure to watch for any potential
Pexeva side effects in your child.
