Dry mouth is a common side effect of Pristiq^® (desvenlafaxine succinate). In clinical studies, up to 11 percent of people taking the drug at the recommended dose of 50 mg per day experienced a dry mouth, compared to 9 percent of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients). People who took a higher Pristiq dosage (up to 400 mg per day) were even more likely to experience dry mouth.

If you are taking Pristiq and dry mouth occurs, there are some things you can do that may provide relief.

These suggestions include the following:

Sip water or sugarless drinks often.
Sip water or sugarless drinks during meals. This will make chewing and swallowing easier, and may also improve the taste of food.
Avoid drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea, and some sodas. Caffeine can dry out the mouth.
Avoid tobacco or alcohol, as these substances can dry out the mouth.
Use a humidifier at night.
Be aware of spicy or salty foods because they may cause irritation and pain in a dry mouth.
Chew sugarless gum or suck on sugarless hard candy to stimulate saliva flow; cinnamon- or mint-flavored candies are good choices.
