Pristiq for Depression

Available only by prescription, Pristiq® (
desvenlafaxine succinate) is a medication approved to treat depression in adults.

Pristiq is part of a group of medications called serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs for short. SNRIs act on specific chemicals within the brain known as serotonin and norepinephrine. When the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine become unbalanced, it can cause conditions such as depression. Pristiq helps block the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine so that more remains in the space between the brain's nerve cells.

Clinical studies have shown this drug to be effective for depression treatment in adults. Also, these studies showed that a lower Pristiq dosage (50 mg per day) is just as effective and causes fewer side effects, compared to a higher dose (100 mg per day).
