Prozac® (
fluoxetine hydrochloride) is a drug that is prescribed to treat various conditions within the brain. It comes in capsule and liquid form and is available in several strengths, including:
- 10 mg Prozac capsules
- 20 mg Prozac capsules
- 40 mg Prozac capsules
- Prozac Weekly 90 mg
- Prozac oral solution 20 mg per 5 mL (20 mg per teaspoonful).
For people with
depression or
obsessive-compulsive disorder, it is generally recommended to start with the 20 mg capsules (one capsule, once daily). The starting dose for children and teens is usually 10 mg or 20 mg once daily. Your child's healthcare provider will consider your child's age, weight, and medical conditions before making a dosing recommendation.
The recommended Prozac dosage for the treatment of
bulimia is 60 mg once a day. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dose in certain situations, such as for elderly people or for people with liver problems.
For people with
panic disorder, the suggested starting Prozac dose is 10 mg once daily. After one week, your healthcare provider may increase the dose to 20 mg once daily.
