Prozac® (
fluoxetine hydrochloride) is a medication often used for treating
depression and various other conditions within the brain. It is available by prescription only and comes in several different strengths, including:
- 10 mg Prozac capsules
- 20 mg Prozac capsules
- 40 mg Prozac capsules
- 90 mg Prozac capsules (Prozac Weekly 90 mg)
- Prozac oral solution 20 mg per 5 mL (20 mg per teaspoonful).
The recommended starting Prozac dose for people with depression or
obsessive-compulsive disorder is 20 mg once daily. You can also take 90 mg Prozac capsules (the long-acting form of the medication, sold by the name Prozac Weekly) to replace the 20 mg daily doses. Prozac Weekly is taken once a week, on the same day each week.
The recommended Prozac dosage for
bulimia is 60 mg once a day. Healthcare providers may prescribe a lower dose in certain situations, such as for elderly people or for people with liver problems.
For the treatment of
panic disorder, the recommended starting dosage is 10 mg once daily. After one week, your healthcare provider may increase the dose to 20 mg once daily.
