Who Should Not Take SSRIs?

In general, you should not take an SSRI if you:

Are allergic to an SSRI, or any of the inactive components used to make SSRIs. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients used to make SSRIs.
Have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past two weeks. MAOIs include:

o Isocarboxazid (Marplan^®)

o Phenelzine (Nardil^®)

o Rasagiline (Azilect^®)

o Selegiline (Eldepryl^®, Emsam^®, Zelapar^®)

o Tranylcypromine (Parnate^®).

Are taking pimozide (Orap^®). Pimozide is a medication used to treat Tourette syndrome and also to prevent hallucinations.
Are taking thioridazine (Mellaril^®), an antipsychotic medication. This warning applies specifically to fluoxetine (Prozac^®).

Also, you should not take fluvoxamine (Luvox^®) if you are taking any of the following medications:

o Alosetron (Lotronex^®)

o Cisapride (Propulsid^®)

o Pimozide (Orap^®)

o Thioridazine (Mellaril^®)

o Tizanidine (Zanaflex^®).
