Trazodone hydrochloride (Desyrel®) is a prescription antidepressant. It is usually taken between one and three times a day, at the same time(s) each day. Although there is no "best" time of day to take trazodone, you should take each dose after a meal or a snack. This is because the medicine is better absorbed by the body after eating.
When first beginning treatment with trazodone, dosing guidelines generally call for 150 mg a day. Depending on your response to the medication, this amount can be increased up to 400 mg per day (or 600 mg for those who are being treated in the hospital). When treating insomnia with trazodone, the dose is usually 25 mg to 50 mg at bedtime.
