Trazodone Indications

Trazodone hydrochloride (Desyrel®) has been proven in large studies to help adults with depression. In a person with clinical depression (also known as major depression), symptoms may include:

  • Eating too much or too little (and weight gain or weight loss)
  • Having little interest in things you used to enjoy
  • Physical pain
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Sleeping too much or not enough.

Besides these approved indications, trazodone is also prescribed for several other uses. Even though trazodone is not approved to treat insomnia, it is frequently prescribed in an "off-label" fashion for this use. It is also used to treat alcoholism in some cases.
