Trazodone Risks

Every medicine presents risks, and

trazodone hydrochloride (Desyrel^®) is no exception. In clinical studies, serious problems -- such as suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, or signs of an allergic reaction -- were reported in rare cases. Sexual side effects are also possible. However, most people are able to take this antidepressant without any problems.

To reduce your risk of trazodone side effects -- and to make sure this drug is right for you -- let your healthcare provider know if you have any of the following:

Bipolar disorder or a family history of bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression)
Heart disease
A recent history of heart attack
A history of suicide attempts or suicidal thoughts
An upcoming surgery.

Be sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding. Also, let him or her know if you have any allergies or are taking any other medications.
