An Overview of Trimipramine Dosing
The dose of
trimipramine maleate (
Surmontil®) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- Your age
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be currently taking.
As always, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
Trimipramine Dosing for Depression
The recommended starting trimipramine dose for
depression is 75 mg total per day, divided into two or three smaller doses per day. Your healthcare provider may increase your dose (if necessary) if you tolerate trimipramine well, up to a maximum of 200 mg total per day (or 300 mg in certain rare circumstances). Also, your healthcare provider may recommend taking your entire daily dose all at once at bedtime, instead of taking several smaller doses per day.
Although trimipramine is not approved for use in teens, the manufacturer gives recommendations for trimipramine dosing in teens. For teenage depression or
depression in the elderly, lower doses are recommended. The recommended starting dose for teens or elderly people is trimipramine 50 mg total per day. The maximum dose for these age groups is trimipramine 100 mg per day.
