Drug Interactions With Venlafaxine XR

There are a number of medicines that can potentially interact with venlafaxine XR, including tramadol, tryptophan, and St. John's wort. Drug interactions with venlafaxine XR can change the levels of some drugs in your blood, increase your risk of side effects, and cause a group of symptoms known as serotonin syndrome (which can include confusion, hallucinations, and a fever).

Drug Interactions With Venlafaxine XR: An Introduction

 Venlafaxine XR (Effexor XR®) can potentially interact with a number of other medicines. Some of the drugs that can lead to venlafaxine XR interactions include:
 
  • Alcohol
  • "Blood thinners," including anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications such as:

 

    • Aspirin (Bayer® and others)
    • Clopidogrel (Plavix®)
    • Heparin or heparin-like products, such as:

 

      • Dalteparin (Fragmin®)
      • Enoxaparin (Lovenox®)
      • Tinzaparin (Innohep®)
