Who Should Not Take Venlafaxine XR?

You should not take venlafaxine XR if you:
 
  • Are allergic to venlafaxine hydrochloride, Effexor XR, or any inactive components used to make venlafaxine XR. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist has a list of the inactive ingredients used to make venlafaxine XR.
  • Are taking linezolid (Zyvox®) or intravenous methylene blue. Venlafaxine XR should not be started in people taking linezolid or IV methylene blue, but a person already taking venlafaxine XR may be given linezolid or methylene blue, if absolutely necessary, and only with very careful monitoring and only if venlafaxine XR is stopped during treatment.
  • Have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the past two weeks. Also, you should not take an MAOI if you have taken venlafaxine XR within the past seven days. Some examples of MAOIs include:
