Rare Side Effects of Venlafaxine XR

There are other possible venlafaxine XR side effects that can occur. These rare side effects occur in less than 1 percent of people who take the drug. It is often difficult to tell whether these problems are actually caused by the medication or something else.

Some of these rare side effects of venlafaxine XR include (but are not limited to):

Suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts
Extreme confusion
Chest pain
High cholesterol
Face swelling
Swelling of the tongue
Hemorrhoids
Muscle and bone pain
Abnormal bleeding or bruising
Anemia
Liver problems
Mania or hypomania
Decreases in blood sodium levels
Asthma
Acne
Sleep apnea
Cataracts
Enlarged prostate (known medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH)
Hair loss (see Effexor XR and Hair Loss).

Side Effects of Venlafaxine XR: Final Thoughts

It is possible that you may experience some or none of the venlafaxine XR side effects explained above. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have side effects from a medicine that you have never tried. Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects during treatment with venlafaxine XR. Also let your healthcare provider know if you develop something that "just does not seem right" while taking this medicine. While it may not be a side effect of venlafaxine XR, your healthcare provider should be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
