Side Effects of Venlafaxine XR

Weakness, constipation, and nausea are among the common side effects of venlafaxine XR. Some uncommon venlafaxine XR side effects include hemorrhoids, muscle and bone pain, acne, and mania or hypomania. There are also some more serious side effects with venlafaxine XR that you should report to your healthcare provider, including suicidal thoughts or behavior, hostility or aggressiveness, and extreme elation (or a feeling of happiness that may switch back and forth with a depressed or sad mood).

Side Effects of Venlafaxine XR: An Introduction

As with any medicine, there are possible side effects with venlafaxine XR (Effexor XR®). However, not everyone who takes venlafaxine XR will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate venlafaxine XR well. When side effects of venlafaxine XR do occur, in most cases they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Venlafaxine XR

Venlafaxine XR has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In such studies, many people are given a particular medicine and are then compared to a group of people not given the medicine. In these studies, the side effects are always documented. As a result, it is possible to see what side effects occur with a medication, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine.

Based on these studies, the most common side effects of venlafaxine XR include:

  • Nausea -- reported in up to 35 percent of people
